Happy Birthday Mom! Sarcoma Awareness
Today is my mom's birthday. She is no longer with us. For those that read me, you may recall that my mom passed away just short of Thanksgiving 2006 from Liposarcoma. Sarcomas are rare forms of cancer. Below is a post I did back in 2009. Any chance I get to bring awareness to this cancer, I do, because rare cancers are not funded well & they have to do so much on their own. Unfortunately, if enough people don't die from it, the funding is minimal!
Happy Birthday Mom!

This post was done back in 2009 BUT I changed the dates for this year's events & put the links if you are interested in joining or sponsoring a team.
Because I think many of you will be busy this weekend & may not get to the computer to check the fitness sites & more, I wanted to do my Mother's Day post today. I will post Sunday too, but I really want to get this post & the information in it out today when more people will see it. Also, I have a link towards the end of the post with a short video called "The Dash". Please take time to watch it.
Today, I want to talk about my deceased Mom. Her birthday is May 14th so Mother's Day & her bday always fell near each other or on the same day. For those of you that might not look at my green sidebar, near the bottom, I have a "My Cause" post. This is what is says:
RIGHT NOW - 2010!
In addition, there is a Team Sarcoma event every year in July that is not only in the U.S. but it is also an international event. This year it is July 17-25, 2010. Check out this link, Team Sarcoma 2010 or this link Team Sarcoma to see if there is an event near you. Just by getting some exercise, you can give!!!!!!!! Here is even another link on how you can get involved.
Please check out the other links under My Cause for additional organizations, a YouTube video on this cancer & a site if you want to buy a t-shirt or other apparel item to support the cause. There are also some great bracelets for those that may want to give that way!
I have lost my mom (liposarcoma) and my mother-in-law (small cell lung) to cancer. They said my mom's cancer was not related to her smoking which she had stopped about 5 years prior to the cancer but I just don't know. I urge all of you to be aware of your body & urge those family & friends around you to do the same. If something is not right, follow up. My mom was misdiagnosed multiple times because of the rarity of this cancer. You know your body better than anyone else!
Once again, here is one of the posts I did on Women & cancer: Cancer Symptoms Women Ignore and just this past Sunday, I had a link for silent symptoms of cancer at this post.
A book to read: Anticancer, by David Servan Schreiber. He talks about food, exercise, way of life and reads easily (he talks about his own brain cancers). This is a very recent book (end 2007) and it is very in line with the new (November 2007) recommendations from the World Cancer Research Fund.
Please watch this very inspiring video & let me know what you intend to do with "Your Dash".
Thank you all for your support of my blog!
PS: The pictures above are my mom. The "play pic" has my mom in the middle with the 1920 banner on her. She loved drama, theater, singing and more so after my dad passed, she got back into this. She loved it & I am glad she got to do some of it before cancer took her life.

I say it so often, and I always mean it; you are a Gem.

Happy birthday to your mom. She is still with you in spirit. She must have had a wonderful and fun life. I can't imagine my mom being on stage like that!
Thanks for making me aware of Sarcoma.

There is a lot of good advice here. All too often we let signs of problems go ignored.
Have a great day Jody!

I understand more about this than I would ever have wanted to, Jody. This is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful woman.

Hang in there today. Focus on the good and happy times in her "dash", as will I.

Happy birthday to your Mom, may she rest in peace always. A very heartfelt post. Being a cancer survivor myself I relate and commend you on your courage and diligence for cancer awareness. Keeping cancer in mind is the first step to someday defeating it.
Thanks for sharing.
