Pure Physique - Book Review & GIVEAWAY
First, the winner of the FitDeck Cards giveaway is: Joanna!!! Joanna, you can either email me your mailing address at jody@truth2beingfit.com OR you can email FJ directly at info@flawlessfitnessbook.com. FJ picked the winner by a random number generator since he is the one providing the FitDeck cards for this giveaway. Thx again FJ!
I was contacted by the publisher of this book, Pure Physique, to read and review it on my blog. I am also able to offer a GIVEAWAY for 1 copy. The book is written by Michael Lipowski. Some of his credentials per his book are: certified fitness clinician, President of the International Association of Trainers, a competitive natural bodybuilder, contributing writer to a number of health & fitness magazines.Since I am a weight lover, I jumped at the chance to read a book about it! On the whole, I thought the book was good BUT it is fairly technical in terms of "the read". I am one of those people that prefers an easier read, like pictures - Hey, he is in shape so pics would not hurt!
vs. a technical read. BUT I still want to get the information so for me, a bit technical but good info. Saying all that, it does have a lot of good information for beginners and intermediate workout people & yes, even some good stuff for advanced people. Heck, GREAT advice for those "advanced people" that think they know what they are doing but really don't! ![]()
The one thing Michael kept reiterating in the book that there is NO ONE RIGHT WAY. I really liked that since I go by that rule. I don't follow this crap people like to say about "you have to do it this way or else stuff". NOT! We are all different & we always have to find what works best for us & Michael did say that throughout his book.
He also points out that "what worked for the old you will not necessarily work for the new you". Meaning that the bod changes & you may have to make adjustments to your food & exercise program to keep moving forward & continue getting results. I am so on board with that & you have all read my posts about the many changes I have made thru the years to my program - yes, exercise AND food!
He also states how some people have to work harder than others & that is a fact of life & their bod. Just like real life & yes, it sucks. I know about that & how hard I have worked vs. the next person. A GREAT reason to stop comparing yourself to the next person on the treadmill or your friend or that person over there in the gym. Some have it easier & some don't!
So, yes, Michael goes thru a lot of technical jargon BUT if you like that or can flow with that for the learning & informational sake, I think you will really like this book. For me, I always like learning about this & like anything else, I take it in & then make decisions & choices based on what works best for me. The key is that you are armed with information, you can try it & adjust as need be.
On a whole I think this is a good book. If you want another review, check out FJ's review here. FJ did not like the wide margins on the page but I did not mind. I often like to write things in a book or make notes & the wider margins left space for that for me.
For another review, check out this one from Catapult Fitness. She felt that " some individuals may feel let down by this read if they're looking for someone to hand-feed them a workout and diet plan.

I usually avoid fitness related books, because I don't like risking my deeply established values -- how's that for paranoia...?
I shall give it a go, but probably not until June -- the reading pile grows and the reading time does not.
What makes me want to give it a go, is the "some people work harder than others" perspective, because ultimately, does anything more need to be said....? Rhetorical.

I love resistance training because it makes me stronger...

Jody, I completely agree with you and the author where we should "do it our own WAY".
I just joined a new gym and they told me I had to do my strength training first THEN my cardio. I said, "I don't think so" I like doing it my way. Plus, as a Diabetic I need to eat my Cliff bar first before my work out to get my sugar up there in preparation for my workout.
Anyways, I'm glad I'm not alone in this thinking!

Sheri, I have always been told that too & I always do my cardio first. I love weights more so I prefer to get the cardio over with. Also, this way feels better for me. I have energy & mental for the cardio & I love weights so I always have energy & mental for that. I even did this during bodybuilding days & it did not hurt me then.

I've been resistance training since my mid-twenties and love it for so many reasons. In my 20's it gave me the legs I'd been dreaming of. In my 40's it has taken away my knee pain.

Karen, love that! I have been at it since my 20's too!

Resistance training has helped me do low squats. That helped extremely when I visited a 3rd world country last summer, and there were little or no existence of modern world pottys!
Just thought that might an interesting outcome of good resistance training!

I have this book and really enjoyed it but I do agree it needs more pictures for me as well. I gave it to my hubby and he says he is learning a lot from it. So good for any gym guru that would like to get stronger!

Ah, you finally got through the book... I was wondering when you were gona throw up the review.
I found it pretty polarizing... some great points and some really messed up points. Like the whole mac&cheese caloric deficit. Comedy at its best

The one thing guaranteed to turn me off someone's "plan" is for them to state that it's the One True Way.
Thanks for the review!

Aarrgg..I hate how I always have to miss the giveaways living here in Canada.
Yes, we are all different and it sure isn't fair that some seem to have it so much easier to get their bods where they want them. I am one that has to work her ass off to get to where I want to be. But, that okay. I can be proud that I worked hard for my bod!
