Obesity, The Crisis, Jamie Oliver, My Feelings

Oprah Video on this
I have posted about the Jamie Oliver show that airs on Friday nights. It is such an eye opener to what is happening to this society in terms of food choices, lack of exercise, lack of parental involvement, lack of health knowledge to help not only keep ourselves as adults on track for a healthier life but OUR KIDS TOO! Parents/adults have to start taking ownership of this crisis too as they are part of it.
If you have watched any of it, you saw how the local DJ along with many of the people in that town bashed Jamie . They felt offended at being called the most obese town in America. Objectively, you can understand their feelings - being hurt & all - but we all have mirrors & unfortunately even though we do, many of us still play the lie game with ourselves or the fool game: Like, I really did not eat that much when you know you ate lots OR I exercise so why am I not losing weight when you actually talked 20 minutes out of the 30 minutes you put aside for exercise OR you just went through the motions. We all know the many excuses if we are honest with ourselves.
Now I am not saying it is not hard to lose weight. What I am saying is that if you are going to do it - DO IT! Don't play the blame game & blame everyone else but yourself. We have the choice to eat or not eat and to move or not move!
Did you see the Oprah show that showed the clip from the Jamie Oliver show above? This is how he turned the DJ to his side. He showed him what coffins are looking like these days! OMG, take a look & think! These super sized coffins (like super sized meals) have tripled in sales the past 10 years. TRIPLED IN SALES!!!!! Look at the small one in the background for a regular sized person vs. the larger one. The mortician explained that there is no dignity for the dead. They have to tip the coffin on its side to move it thru doors & the body clunks around in the coffin. It takes cranes to move it into the burial site. They can't cremate these bodies due to the way the flames consume the body because of all the body fat.
Before this trip to the mortuary, the DJ said on air, we like to eat what we like to eat & if we want to eat the side of a cow, so be it. Oh yes, they are going to eat what they want to eat & they are also going to feed what they want to eat to their children. So by doing that, they are effecting the health of their own children, cutting years off their life & saddling them with diseases that used to be for adults only!
In the most recent show, Jamie brought local teenagers under his wing to learn to cook healthy. A few of them said they joined with him because they lost parents & relatives due to complications from being overweight. Others had family dying from obesity. One very heavy gal said the doctor told her she had spots on her either kidneys or liver, I can't recall which one BUT she was also told she may have only 7 years to live.
I am not sorry if this is grossing you out. We have to face these facts that we are not only killing ourselves but our children!!!! Jamie went to an elementary school class & set out a bunch of vegetables. The children had no idea what they were - NOT EVEN A RUSSETT POTATO! They live their life eating french fries yet they had no idea what a potato was or a tomato or broccoli among many other vegetables!
One local family asked for Jamie's help. He put out the food they eat in a week on their kitchen table. Not one GREEN thing on that table! It was all golden & fried foods. He even had a burial ceremony for their deep fryer since they used it so much.
Back when AFG wrote this post on the show, there was a comment from Roy about the rides at Disneyland. In fact, Roy asked me to write this post because he thought I would be "gentler" but I don't think I lived up to that. Anyway, living in southern CA myself, I had heard about this quite a while back. The retrofitting of rides to accommodate the obese. Now we all want dignity but something is wrong with promoting, in a way, people getting bigger & bigger. I know I will get flack on this but I mean it - why do we want to allow people to get bigger! Why don't we want to work on prevention of this! I know many stories of people that lost weight just by the incentive of being able to enjoy things like Disneyland with their kids.
I was at Disneyland a week or so ago with my grandkids who were in town for "the wedding". I have been to Dland, as I call it, many times. It is a slice of life across America. All kinds of people there. Well, this time, I have never seen so many obese people, children & adults. I have been many times & this was by far, the most I have ever seen. Whole families from young to old. People in motorized carts because they were too heavy to walk YET still eating like crazy. There is no way I want to eat a drumstick the size of a chihauhau but others saw no problem in that.
I went on Pirates of the Caribbean. It was obvious to me that the boats had been retrofitted for larger people & I already knew they had done that to It's a Small World. Read that article link.
Being in the fitness arena, I saw the skinny fat too. These are people that are not overweight appearance wise but still unhealthy. I can spot some of them. I actually started looking for people that had some muscle like me. Usually I spot quite a few. I like to see those fit & healthy people. This trip, I did not see one women with some muscle on her. It was a hot day so I would see it as everyone had on shorts & short sleeve tops. A few guys did OK but on the whole, not too many.
Honestly, I may sound mean to some BUT I just want to help people face the fact that we are killing ourselves. Heck, you are killing your children if you feed them enough of this stuff to get them this way.
I am asking all of you to look around & see the light. Take a good look at your own life & family too. Again, I am not saying we have to be perfect BUT we have to take PREVENTATIVE action to not only keep ourselves healthy but the kids.
Please be honest with yourself & start taking some baby steps to a healthier life for you & your family/friends. Spread the word & lets change the direction of this obesity crisis.
Remember, it is the ones left living that suffer the loss of a loved one.
HUGS from Jody!

you KNOW I agree with you. and have been known to toughtoughlove my friends about this as well.
parents who say "MEH I HAVE NO MOTIVATION TO WORKOUT EAT HEALTHY WHATEVERS..."
they have to do it.
for their children and their spouses.
for those whom they'd leave behind.

I struggle with this topic lately, as it seems to straddle the fence between accepting others as they are (unconditional love) and my belief in mind-body connection (which in this case, for me, means that when we're overweight physically, we're heavily burdened internally and we grow ourselves outward to keep others at bay).
For me, it's a fine line. I used to think people should all want to lose weight, eat better, etc. Now I know that those are fine goals for me to have personally, but the minute I wish them on anyone else, I'm removing myself from the healing space of love.
And while medically this isn't exactly the same (and I say that loosely because western medicine is suspect in many ways, in my mind), our need to alter physical accommodations for bigger people these days isn't much different than it was at the turn of the 1900's. Back when the US was settled by Europeans in the 1600 & 1700's, people were a lot shorter than they are today. Doorways and ceilings were lower and narrower. These days, average height has increased significantly so the housing built way back when cannot accommodate average heights today.
This issue of the human race impeding on its surroundings is not new. It's just manifesting in new ways that are socially open to criticism.

Megan, you do have a different take on this. All I would say is if the adults want to kill themselves, that is their decision, I guess but what they do to the children, their children, is not fair in my eyes. They are not even giving them a chance, the tools to fight back.
Also, I do think there is a difference in height issues vs. weight issues that cause illness & death.
Thank you for your comment & your take on this though!

i saw that oprah show and was appalled at so much of it - the caskets, the poor kids who had never seen a vegetable to that mom who served nothing but crap to her family.
i guess i wear rose-colored glasses because i couldn't believe that people really lived that way. it was a real eye-opener and i hope that jamie's great message gets out there asap.

We have discussed this so much Jody. I love what you just wrote. I have written about till I just can't anymore. I will distill it down to this single sentence:
"We have a responsibility to to live well."

POWERFUL POST... Sometimes tho, the baby steps aren't enough anymore! I am seeing that I need to go FULL board..This is NOT something I can tread lightly with anymore. I gave up sodas a year ago, I started eating more vegetables, gave up fast food, BUT...I stay the same..Exercise, weights, AND the emotional and food ALL need to be worked on at the same time....FOR ME anyway...Again...POWERFUL POST

I agree with everything you said Jody. It's obvious that you care. We are doing no favors for people when we accommodate for their bad habits. That sounds harsh, I know, but basically by accommodating, we are saying it's acceptable and worse, teaching our children that it is acceptable.

Thanks for the post Jodi. I've also been following the school lunch discussion. It makes me SO sad that not only are people doing this to themselves, they're doing it to their children who don't know any better until it's too late!

Great post! Talking about obesity is a must! This is a huge disease that is killing people of all ages. It's got to start with parents. I've seen so many overweight kids! When I was kid, I was moving around so dang much to gain weight at all...plus my mom made me eat my veggies! We've got to do something to change the super size meal mentality! We need to help others who weren't helped before. Cut portion sizes. Workout! Eat right! Great post Jody!

Jen, thx as always for your comments. We need prevention so it does not become a fixing game...
