No Gym Required! Jamie Oliver Fighting Child Obesity!
I have not read the book BUT I loved the exercises shown on the show & had to share the video! Hey, you can do these at home & why not try to do each one during every commercial break of your fav TV show & see how many circuits you can complete! The exercises are:
1. 1 arm slide planks with furniture sliders or towels. They show the furniture sliders.
2. Glutes and hamstrings plus core with the same furniture sliders.
3. Mountain climbers with paper plates or dish towels. They show the paper plates.
4. Abductors/Adductors also known as the outer/inner thighs along with core with the same paper plates.
5. Weighted jump roping that will work cardio & upper body at the same time.
6. Plie squat with a twist and plie squat with a twist on the toes using a ball/dumbbell OR empty bleach/detergent bottle filled with water. Works the legs, glutes, calves, upper body, core.
7. Step out squat with an elastic band.
This video of all these exercises is only 4 minutes to watch. I think it is a great addition to your home workout OR take the moves to the gym with you!

Childhood Obesity - From National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion
Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 years increased from 6.5% in 1980 to 19.6% in 2008. The prevalence of obesity among adolescents aged 12 to 19 years increased from 5.0% to 18.1%.1,2
Obesity is the result of caloric imbalance (too few calories expended for the amount of calories consumed) and is mediated by genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors.3,4 Childhood obesity has both immediate and long-term health impacts:
- Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. In a population-based sample of 5- to 17-year-olds, 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.5
- Children and adolescents who are obese are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem.3,6
- Obese youth are more likely than youth of normal weight to become overweight or obese adults, and therefore more at risk for associated adult health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.6
Healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower the risk of becoming obese and developing related diseases.3

I saw that episode of the Today show. As a matter of fact, my scheduled post for tomorrow is on the same subject. I liked the way that Jennifer Cohen illustrated the use of items you might have around the house rather than purchasing expensive equipment. My designer had me do mountain climbers and pikes with the furniture movers like demonstrated on Today-very challenging!

Thanks for the link to the workout! Considering my gym and I are having a spat, I've got my eyes open for new opportunities in home workouts. I already do some variation on most of these, but the adductor/abductor was a new twist.

Yesterday I heard Michelle Obama's brother, head basketball coach at Oregon St. talking about how Pizza Hut was so wonderful and supportive of sports, all the while pushing the pizza! Meanwhile his sister, Michelle is "fighting" childhood obesity?? Where is the logic in this,. or the really giving a damn?

He deserves more than an applaud! It is such a great thing that Jamie Oliver is doing, I really hope it opens the eyes of everyone out there and a change does take place!

I'll definitley have to check this out. I know programs like Insanity and P90X work on this concept of using the body and only the body.
