A New Workout Option - Beaming

Tuesday March 16, 2010

Beaming is a new type of workout that I saw on a segment of the news. It looked pretty cool & a new way to work the bod. It never hurts to check these things out because not only do we need to change it up to keep the bod guessing BUT many people get bored with things & give up. Hey, there are always new ways to work out and enjoy it along with the results you get from it! If you click on the link above, it takes you to the beaming website & you can look at more pictures of the workout along with reading more about it. It shows you how you can do this at home too even though classes are popping up in some gyms. I really want to try this! Beaming people, contact me!

Below is the story I saw on my local news station:

A new fitness program is proving to be a real balancing act. It offers a killer core workout and a mind-body connection, without striking a yoga pose.

"It's hard, harder than I expected. It takes a lot of concentration," said Monica Pack, Beam Fit student.

"It's really about going within and connecting with mind and body," said Catherine Chiarelli, Crunch. "I'll be honest it's like nothing I've ever done."

Fitness pros like Catherine Chiarelli are always looking for new ways to challenge their body. And a new take on an old piece of equipment proved to be just the ticket. The balance beam is one of the best in a gymnastic event. Well it's made its way into the gym -- kind of. If you'd like to get to the core of your workout this one is for you.

Beam Fit, stands for balance, engage, align and move. Currently classes are held at Crunch three days a week in West Hollywood, although you can buy foam beam and DVD's online. But take note, this program requires a lot of concentration.  "It really forces you to be present in the now because if you think about something else you're going to fall off the beam," said Chiarelli. The one hour class offers Pilate type moves with balance work and an emphasis on feet and ankle stability. While it looks easy it hits muscles hard.

"I got a huge workout. I was sweating, but I was connecting and my body felt amazing," said Chiarelli. Like many fitness programs today, the core or stomach and back are key players. "Your inner thighs, your butt, everything is sore," said Chiarelli.

Along with balance, posture and flexibility, more advanced classes utilize weights for fat burning benefits. Yet Beam Fit students like Monica Pack say it is the body to brain connection that sets this program apart. "It's not about what part I want to look good, it's about the whole body," said Pack. "If you only think about one part something else goes. It's a whole body connection definitely." Classes are Monday at 3:15 p.m., Wednesday at 6 p.m., and Saturdays at 9:15 a.m. at Crunch in West Hollywood. If you mention you saw the story on KABC-TV you can take your first class for free, otherwise a day pass is $16.00.

So, I have never tried this workout BUT it looks pretty cool to me & I can think of a lot of things I can do at home along with what they are showing on their site. Is this something you would be interested in to tone up, work the core & help with balance? Thoughts?

A few years ago the university's gymnastics coach lived down the street. Usually during the spring recruiting season while running, I would see all these small, fit, young women with excellent beam balance walking through the neighborhood

Looks interesting. Core work should be at the center of our workouts and it's always nice to try something new. If you try a class I hope you'll share your thoughts.

Diane, I loved the floor exercise part of gymnastics!. Those parallel bars scared the sh*t out of my short bod! Beam was right in the middle for me!

Never heard of it until right now. Until recently I would have viewed this more as a skeptic. Probably not something I will try, but I can definitely see the utility in it.

One thing I try hard to preach to my clients and at my speaking gigs, is that balance, above all else, is the supreme fitness value -- especially for those of us near or past the 1/2 century mark.

If you do this Jody, would love to know how it goes for you.

Ah yes, you bring up the age factor!!! You are so right though. Very important as we age. Plus, this workout works so many other things too. Looks fun to me! I like that you can buy it for home too.. well, if you have the extra money.

I am trying to get the Beaming people to provide me a free sample for test.. we shall see.
