Inspirational Thoughts; Healthcare Reform

I saw this quote over at the very inspirational blog, The Jungle of Life. If you have not gone there yet, do so & read some of Lance's past posts. Really amazing!
I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather.
I possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration, I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal.
In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated, and a person is humanized or de-humanized.
If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
A special thank you to Dr. Holly Latty-Mann for sharing this quote. (from Lance's blog & thought I should put that on here too)
I just loved this quote!!! It says so much to life & the way we live it and how we treat others & ourselves!
Healthcare
Saying this, I do want to throw in a tiny bit of my healthcare reform Sunday. I have not done this for a couple weeks so I want to do a quick one on it. These are my thoughts & I have no idea what Lance does or does not believe so attribute this last part just to me. I just wanted to get Lance's post out to you & today seemed a good day to do that.
Why are some of the people out there fighting so hard to not have healthcare reform. Their fight at the beginning is what lead to such watered down bills in the House & Senate as the administration tried to meet them half way. And with the trying, came the continuous no's but no solution from the no brigade. As this continues, I guaranty you that those with health insurance will have rate hikes. In fact it is already happening now. You will get sick & rates will escalate, maybe beyond your means OR they will find a sneaky way to cancel you. Those with pre-existing conditions will be forced to be without & the ramifications of that are broad. Those that may lose your job & now find themselves without health insurance will wonder why they fought the reform. Let's all thing about this long & hard. Whether you have it or not, the insurance companies & their lobbyists run this game. You WILL have rate increases, you may not be able to afford them, you may give up important medications due to money issues, you may give up insurance all together due to the rates.... People, let's make healthcare affordable for all, access to all & believe me, those insurance companies are still going to make plenty of billions like they do now!
While I am at it & my ranting.. with all my teeth probs, I just have to say that I never understood why there was never a decent dental plan or coverage out there. Dental work is sooooooooooooo expensive yet I have never seem a comprehensive dental plan that covers very much. Maybe people would go more often if there was a plan that helped them in this regard. It is quite unaffordable for most average folks.
OK, feel free to leave comments on your thoughts about Lances' blog, healthcare reform or even what you think about the lack of dental insurance.

Dental work is so very expensive - especially the non-required work, such as braces.
I really hope you are able to get all your teeth problems taken care of Jody.

Yay, HCS! I had a dream last night that health care reform passed both the house and the senate and we got a newspaper and the headline was in HUGE letters saying "PASSED". I seriously dreamt that. LOL! I get so frustrated at what's happening in Washington over this...Hopefully it will happen soon!

Josie, what a dream!!!! Would be nice if it was real health reform & not this watered down stuff! Yes, Washington is a mess!

Hi Jody,
First off, thank you so much for your wonderfully sweet and kind words here today. I am deeply honored.
Health care. Something the small company I'm at continuously reviews each year, in an effort to make it affordable. Not always easy. And still, I'm lucky that I have coverage. Much more than some have. And when I think about this, how can we deny people the choice of their health?? Part of that is educating people on the importance of proper diet and exercise. That's another topic, though. Being denied coverage, because of what it costs - this seems so against what should be basic principles at our core.
And dental coverage - it just seems like this is so tied to our overall health, and yet, it's not part of normal health coverage -another one that I don't fully understand.
Jody, this is a great message you are putting out there...

Lance, thx so much for stopping by. Your blog is very inspirational!
Yes, dental care is tied to our health so why is it so unaffordable to the average middle class.

I don't believe that one senator should have the power to deny healthcare for all Americans. I say to him and hope it gets to him, take away you health care, your wife's health care and especially your daughter's health care and then lets see you response to universal healthcare. We don't people like him playing political hero to the right for no other reason but selfishness.

I realize this is a contrarian view, but I feel going down the more insurance road is a mistake! One of the reasons dentistry had been affordable is it was a free market based price scale with competition keeping the prices down. As insurance has gotten into dentistry, prices have gone up! Now it's happening in Veterinary Medicine. Prices there are skyrocketing because of pet insurance. The answer is to shop around and tell your chosen provider that you can't afford their price. Most will work with you. Looking for help on the local level is the real answer, not with the government.

Dr. J, I agree that the insurance companies need to reigned in but I guess the other part is one of our few disagreements.
Yes, you can try to get doctors & dentists to work with you but it is still way more expensive than having decent insurance to help. It does not bring the cost down enough & what about when things happen out of the ordinary. There is no time to shop around. I just think there needs to be some real push on these insurance companies because they have been & are taking advantage of people.

Great quote. It reminds me of my conversation I had with my 4 year old today:
Skye: (At 7 a.m.) I'm having a bad day.
Me: Already?
Skye: It's a bad day.
Me: Only if you want it to be.
Health care - Why do they have to make it so complicated? Open up state borders so insurance companies can compete (lowering prices) and remove the pre-existing illness clause and maybe extend Medicare to all. I'm probably naive. What do I know?
I do know our rates have increased this year even though the insurance company made almost $4 billion profit last year. Makes me sick.
