Boxing Update; Giveaway Information

TGIF, Friday, January 8, 2009

Sorry guys, I am late getting back to you on my last boxing class! Being the beginning of a new year, I wanted to get some basic information out there for people starting up a weight loss program as well as those that are continuing on with their current program. Of course, I will continue to offer up some more basic advice next week. We all would not be health/fitness/weight loss bloggers if we did not do that!

So, last week I took a straight boxing class, not kickboxing. It was all about hitting that bag! Now how fun is that... taking out our aggressions on that bag OR just trying to prove how strong we are or that we can just do it!!!! The class, of course, started out with a warm up. This one different from the kickboxing class. It was lots of running in place, jumping jacks, cross jumping jacks, twist jumps all while moving our arms or doing punching motions. It was more in line with keeping us loose & on our toes like I guess you would have to do if you were a boxer.

After the warm up, it was all about punching that bag as the instructor called out various combinations to do. He would call out a combination & then we had to work hard at that for 1-2 minutes plus. We would hit the bag for that series of combinations but we also had to move around the bag & do those combos on various sides of the bag so we did not stay in one place the whole time. Kept us moving & loose! The instructor also came around to each person in the class & had them do the combination at him. He had those mitts on that you see on The Biggest Loser when they are doing boxing drills on that show.

We also had time segments that we would just punch the bag or do uppercuts to the bag at a very fast pace! AND, intermixed in that, some push-ups & other plyometric drills! At the end of the class was abs/core. An amazing workout! As an outsider, I was thinking, how is just boxing going to work me as hard as kickboxing.... well, it worked me hard!!!! I really enjoyed it!!!!

This time around, my shoulders were not as sore BUT I did feel it in my forearms & my calves. Interesting. I guess with the "on the toes" warm-up & more emphasis on the looseness (like you see boxers do "that dance" if you watch any professional boxing). My hubby loves to watch boxing so I see that dancing around in the ring all the time & I tried to mimic that. Now, I do a lot of cardio AND a lot of running/intervals too along with all my lunges, treadmill hill walking/jogging & stuff that works the calves & I still felt it there! Lots of fun and a hard workout!

I heard someone say this on a show a while back: Going out of your comfort zone makes you a more exciting woman (or man for you men out there)! Sounds good to me!

SO, for those of you that think working out & exercise are a chore, it does not have to be all one thing or just the gym or cardio equipment. Find something that you like OR more than one thing that turns you on & keeps you wanting to go back for more! There are many ways to exercise & get fit & strong! Head out of that comfort zone & you never know what you may find there!

OK, what are you doing to join the "uncomfortable zone"? Do your goals include a new activity or challenge? GO FOR IT!

By the way, FJ, from Flawless Fitness is having FitJerk Friday's over at http://thelocalcook.com/. Wendy, from this site shares a recipe and FJ shares a pep talk and its' a chance for others to share food ideas as well. Check it out & he is there every Friday.
