Boxing Update - Uncomfortable Is Good!

Monday, December 14, 2009

So, for those that read my Friday post, you know I headed out of my comfort zone to get some
"boxing" lessons. More on that after a couple other things....

First, I have to wish my father-in-law, Earl, a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! ENJOY!

Second, I was contacted by the vitaminID people with an offer for the holidays. If you recall, I did a giveaway on these Nature Made vitamins & the vitaminID program a while back. Well, if you like those vitamins & that program, here is a discount for you! It's good for $10 off your purchase of a 28-day supply of vitaminID products. To redeem the code, you just have to complete your health survey on vitaminID.com and enter the code SMART2 at checkout and you'll be good to go for receiving your customized daily vitamin regimen. The code expires 12/31/09.

OK, BACK TO BOXING!

So, Friday's one on one was just to learn the techniques of boxing upper body work (jabs & how to turn your body) as well as how to "duck" from a punch! I was fitted with hand wraps & then boxing gloves over them!! Already out of my comfort zone! The trainer gave me lessons on the proper way to do 3 punches while I was holding 1 pound dumbbells. While teaching me these punches, he threw in some holding the arms at parallel for 30-45 seconds plus AFTER the punching drills. We also did some drills where he called out a sequence of punches to do. He told me 3 sequences & so he would call out either 1, 2 or 3 & I had to do the punches that corresponded to that number. It is amazing how much things can burn even when you thought you were in good shape!

After that, he placed a rope across the boxing ring & taught me how to duck a punch. So the drill was to squat, duck & back up again over & over & over BUT there is a certain way to do it. After my already 5 days straight of exercise & legs being done the day before this .. well, let's just say I was feeling it!!!

Last lesson was learning how to hit the speed bag as seen in the pic above. It is the small punching bag opposite the heavy punching bag. You hit it to a 1,2,3 sequence & it is much harder than you think to get that 1-2-3 sequence & for it to not fly in the wrong direction or too fast!

Lessons learned:
  1. This is way out of my comfort zone.
  2. This is a lot harder than I thought it would be although the trainer said many come just to do the classes and get a workout & the perfect technique is not as important as it is to people that come there & really want to box or compete in boxing or kickboxing. BUT, you do have to at least understand the techniques & try to work it as they say!
  3. You want to whittle down the waist & work the core... THIS IS FOR YOU! All that punching & jabbing & the move is to turn from the waist area... I FELT IT!
  4. Want to work the arms, shoulders & more.. this is for you.
  5. Want to work the legs... well, I have not got to kickboxing yet but just the drills on ducking the punch worked me big time!

This coming week I will be taking a kickboxing class. I will work with the trainer 1 on 1 before hand to get some of those basics down before I take that class. I understand the teacher works ya hard! I like that! I like to be pushed!

I must say that although I hated not "being good" at what I was doing, I really liked doing this & I felt it working me. Learning a new skill is like losing weight. We have to be patient because not only does it take time to lose weight, it also takes time to learn a new skill set! I might be one of those that turns out to be "get the workout & the technique might not be perfect" BUT even getting 60-70% technique is good enough for me because that will work ya! More to come. I think I am going to take the kickboxing class Thursday so I hope to get you a post about it Friday or the following Monday.

My thoughts: I have always been one to push myself out of the comfort zone with my current workouts but I will say this: YES TO PUSHING ONESELF WAY OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE!

Anyone else every taken boxing or kickboxing? How have you worked to push yourself out of the comfort zone? If you have not, what will you do to get yourself out of "the same ole thing"? Tell me something you will work towards to get out of that comfort zone into the "I worked my as* off & it felt great" zone!
