Diet/Weight Loss by Changing the Focus

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

I got this great compliment the other day and it came from a 5 year old pictured here
.. well, almost 6 come January. One of my granddaughters told her mom that she wanted to be strong and healthy just like me. Now how cool is that!!!! STRONG AND HEALTHY!!! She did not say thin! Now I love those two words she used & this from an almost 6 year old! THEY ARE LISTENING AND PAYING ATTENTION TO US!

So, I hope you all got to read my Monday post on making your tomorrows TODAY! Don't wait for Monday or tomorrow or after the birthday or come January. Jeez, you could keep pushing this out until the ends of time! Remember, do NOT let your tomorrows get away from you. Let's get healthy NOW - TODAY!

So, I heard this weight loss strategy the other day on The Today Show about how a lady who lost over 100 pounds. She said that she did not focus on her weight loss but focused on changing bad habits into good habits. She started with lunch & changed that. The weight started to come off. She then moved to breakfast & cleaned up that & then moved to dinner & cleaned up that. She also added in exercise over time. Again, like I mentioned in Monday's post, some people like to be more restrictive & others take a slower approach to weight loss. We all have to find our own inner program & motivation that works for us & we can live with for life. If one thing is not working, change it.... CHANGE THE FOCUS & see what happens. Remember my ole Insanity post!

But the thing I wanted to really talk to today was my first paragraph. As we go down this path to healthy living, think how great it is not only for us but for those around us! How we inspire & "rub off" on others we come in contact with day by day. Family is so important. Don't we all want our family, children & loved ones to live a long & healthy life? We can set the example for that! I hate to mention that often on weight loss shows, the parents are big & you see the kids are big too. Those around us no matter how old, how young or how very old, can be inspired by the little things we do. THEY ARE LISTENING & WATCHING.... DON'T THINK THEY ARE NOT. We are an influence with our behaviors & actions.

Let's all take steps, whether baby steps or more aggressive steps to not only put ourselves on the path to wellness but to inspire all those around us to join in! Your children, your husband, your lover, your friends, your parents, your grandparents your fellow bloggers (who are such a great inspiration) and yes, your grandchildren will be all the better for the steps you take to move forward & get healthy! Start NOW! Live your dreams today!

Have you seen how you have influenced others, your children or loved ones with your fitness & eating program? What great stories can you share here? Are you ready to start living life NOW!

I love it! "Strong and healthy" - just as it should be. I try really hard in front of my four kids - I never say "diet" (bad, bad word) or "fat". We talk a lot about eating "healthy" and having a healthy lifestyle. We all work on eating healthy foods at least 85% of the time and let the rest slide. I don't want to go too far the other way either - they do like treats and as long as they stay just that (a "treat"), I'm fine with it.

It's great to see that they ARE watching and listening. My eldest, she's eleven and recently wanted to run with me. We ran a 5k race and then an 8k race. No way would she have done that on her own and it was so fun to share the experience with her!

I also take my kids on my runs and they ride their bikes or we bike ride as a family. I think if we could replace more of the time we sit around and watch tv as a family with real active time that would be so much more fun and we'd all reap the benefits as well.

Melanie, sounds like you are doing it right & passing on good behaviors!!! And moderation. I think they learn how to make choices that way! I wish we could get more to do this! Thx for sharing!

What a golden moment! I had a similar one when my daughter (9) told me I had good strong legs.
Now to be honest my thighs are the least favourite part of my body. Good to know that my daughter likes them, as she is bound to inherit them too.

Great post and definitely an inspiration and the ultimate compliment. I'm pretty sure I've been an inspiration to my daughter to be active and athletic. She's had her ups and downs with staying active and eating right, but she knows what to do and how to do it when she's on track.

Nice compliment! Strong and Healthy -- we should all aspire to fulfill that.

Love the "today" concept you have been touting recently. I am proud to have been associated with more than a few success stories in weight-loss. None of them, not one, ever started on January 1. They have always started on the day the desire to succeed grew larger than the complacency hey hid behind.

    You go granny!

'Strong and fit' was my mantra when I first started losing weight. It was no longer about being thin, but healthy.

When I was working, I created a contest called "On Top of the World." I guestimated how many stairsteps would be required to reach some of the world's tallest landmarks and made badges representing each. Everyone who wanted to participate could earn a badge by climbing the stairs the appropriate number of flights. Last I heard, they were still climbing! (It was fun to have the Finance VP dash into my office demanding his Empire State Building badge!

Great post. My new healthy eating habits have definitely rubbed off on my youngest daughter. She chooses vegs and fruits over chips and candy.

My oldest struggles with the healthy life style but, she does know what she needs to do when she is ready. Mostly it is her boyfriend and friends that still have an influence in how she eats. When she is ready, she knows what to do.

Karyn, so great that you are passing on good habits to the kiddos! The older ones have such peer pressure. It is hard but she knows what to do!
