Eating & Weight Loss Reality - Tomorrow Is NOW

Monday, November 30, 2009

So, we are few days past the Thanksgiving feast for those that had a feast. Some may have even had multiple feasts to go to with different family groups which makes it even harder. Some of you may have made the choice to enjoy all the food & not worry about it. Hey, that is fine if that was your plan. Some may have made the choice to makes choices about what they ate rather than eat all that was put before them.

This is what it is all about. Putting together a plan that works for you long term BUT still allows for weight loss/maintenance. Some may lose the weight slower if they allow more choices of food on a daily basis & others may lose faster if they decide to be more restrictive. The key is always to be able to maintain this long term without falling off the horse, bike or wagon as they say.

So, I know many of you don't like The Biggest Loser but I still watch it. I really do not like the product placement that has invaded it over the years but I still like to watch it & see how they deal with the emotional side, what they bring home to family members that also need help & I like seeing new ways to exercise. I do think it shows that no matter how big or old you are, you can still do this. This was shown in the season that 49 year old Helen won & Jerry, at 64 years old won the at at home prize. I watched the catch up show this past week & they are still maintaining & Jerry works out like a 40 year old! Many of them have maintained or settled into a good weight for them.

BUT, we all know for every success story, there are many that put the weight back on & that was the case with Eric, a winner from a few seasons ago. Eric has put on almost all the 200 + pounds he lost on the show. They met up with him and he said this about what he told himself:

TOMORROW IS THE DAY THAT THIS DOES NOT GO ON ANYMORE AND I KEPT LETTING THE TOMORROWS GET AWAY FROM ME.......

So, here we are a few days past the Thanksgiving feasts. Have you been able to get back to your regular eating & workout schedule? OR, are you still not getting control of your eating/exercising & thinking that you might as well just wait until January with all the holiday things coming up?

Let me be the bearer of bad news & tough love .... THE LONGER YOU STAY AWAY FROM YOUR GOOD HABITS, THE MORE CHANCE YOU HAVE OF NOT GOING BACK. Consistency is a MUST! After all that hard work, do you really want to fall backwards to where you were before?

If you are one of the many that may have not got back up on the horse or bicycle or treadmill, DO IT NOW!!! Get back on your eating & exercise program NOW! If you wait to long, you will be Eric from The Biggest Loser with your tomorrow's getting away from you & with that your health!

One of the things Eric said to Bob the trainer is he has to get back to being restrictive again. Bob, said NO! He told Eric that he knows how to gain weight & he knows how to lose weight but now he has to find the healthy balance & that means a program he can live with long term, even if it takes a bit longer to lose the weight.

Check out Lori's post on this & how she dealt with Thanksgiving & just her eating program for life here. She wrote this: As you all know, enjoying food on a daily basis is important to me to keep the weight off.  That way I don’t feel the need to gorge on particular days of the year, especially since I don’t restrict my calories to the extent that I feel the need to do that.  That is just what works for me.  Everyone is different in how they need to approach these things. Maybe that is what is meant by everything in moderation? I don’t know. That phrase is pretty relative

Please, for those of you that have not got back to your program yet, do it now. Don't let your tomorrows & your health get away from you! Make a program you can live with. It is not one way fits all. Find a way that works for you & you can live with for life.. even if it changes along the way like mine has thru the years. Grab the reins NOW! You can do this!!!!

Don't forget if you want to help those in need, check out 266. She is giving away food to those in need up to 100 comments on her blog. This ends November 30th, today, so get on over there & leave a comment!

OH, TOMORROW IS THE POST FOR THE BAG GIVEAWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    tomorrow is NOW.

I always think of the phrase from a song from RENT "no day like today..." when Im tempted to put lifestuff off until tomorrow.

YES it's far easier to wait to start (and then never to start ) but it's never worth it.

Thank you SO much for posting not once, but twice, about the 'giveaway'! I really, really appreciate it! I love your last post, by the way, and I actually read a portion of it to my husband because I thought it was so insightful. The best thing he has ever done for me along this journey is give his encouragement, his time, and his partnership to me!

      Jessica, thx for visiting!

Lori, you are right on with your comment!

Crabby, yes, slow & steady usually wins the race for most people! Quick results usually end up in quick "put it back on".

    Thanks for the quote!

This is so true. Most people set themselves up for failure by trying to lose weight in a way that is impossible to keep up with for the long haul.

That fear of putting it back on is in the back of my head all the time. After all, all I have to go by is history and my history isn't so good with maintenance. Still, I honestly believe that blogging will be my key to staying gold in the future.

Nice post, J. Really struck a nerve...

Jack, I am glad you liked this & I know you have the fortitude to do it this time around! I wanted to quote this because I thought it might strike a nerve with many & spur them to stay on the course of health!

You are so right that the key to long term success is consistency. So many people want quick results and so try a radical diet or exercise program that just isn't maintainable! And then, they quit in a big way when it gets too hard.

It's a cliche, but slow and steady wins the race!

I completely agree with you. The two thoughts that have helped me stay on course were that I had to do something that I could do for the rest of my life, and if I failed' I just start up RIGHT THEN. And it is different for every person, but if we could get these concepts through to those who are wanting to lose weight, there might be more long term successes. I think that the process of 'giving up' forever their current way of eating is really what most people can;t get past,

I was talking to my best friend yesterday. I told him I was going to play tennis. He said, "I would give my eye-teeth to be able to play tennis. The thing is, we used to play tennis all the time, but he let his health get away because he couldn't say no to too much lousy food, and now he's having joints replaced because of his obesity! I warned him and his wife many years ago, but they didn't care then. I'm so angry, but I don't know who or what to be angry at

It took me so long to get to this point you described. It's so important to find what works for you, and what enables you to be successful. Consistency over the long haul isn't always an easy path. Our minds and hearts often want to pull us back to the area of least resistance, and often times that's the easy path.

    Great post Jody!
