Green America '09 Award PLUS Stifle Boredom!
I want to talk about stifling boredom with the workouts but first, I want to share a short "Vote for Green America 2009 Peoples Choice award. I heard about this in my Care2 newsletter as they are one of the choices BUT clicking on the link lets you read not only about them BUT ALL THE OTHER entries. Here is the short article below & click on the link to vote & read about the other companies:"Great news! Care2 is one of the top nominees for Green America’s 2009 People’s Choice Award! Voting ends soon, so please vote today and then forward to your friends and family. Thanks for your support! Every vote counts! The award is a celebration of the leaders of the green economy, and a challenge to corporate America to follow their path. The recipient must be considered a green business: one that works to help - not hurt - people, communities, and the planet. Care2 is one of the ten businesses on the final ballot - vote here!"
OK, so on to boredom in the workout..... I hear this all the time about how people hate the weights because they are so boring & they hate to work out because it is so boring.... on and on and on! I have posted more than I can count about how a person can change up their workouts to fend off "boredom". Nobody said the rule was you had to jog 4 miles 4-5 days a week or do the lifecycle or Elliptical machine 40 minutes 4-5 times a week. Nobody said you had to go to the gym & lift all those "scary" weights 5 times per week.
Yes, I am a gym rat & I LOVE LIFTING WEIGHTS but there are plenty of ways to mix it up at home with exercise bands, water bottles, bags of sugar or flour or anything else around the house. You can also do body weight workouts & man, those are some hard workouts! You all know about my quest to do one wide grip pull-up! The workout in the previous link is just one of many body weight workouts I found by googling the term. I could spend a lot of space talking about it but for this post, I just want you to think thru the options. Go to the beach or playground to up the ante & push yourself more. Ever try lunges, push-ups, walking lunges & so forth on the sand! Try some walking or jogging on the sand too. Another great way to push yourself - the playground has plenty of options for you! MizFit has posted many times about these workouts so head over there & search her site for the playground workouts or home workouts! I have put plenty in my blog for you to read like this or this or this.
You can take Zumba or ball room dancing (the bods of those dancers on Dancing with the Stars AND the body changes of those that have gone on the show to compete) or step class or rollerblade or swim or bike ride or ice skate or snow shoe now that cold weather is a coming or ski or kick boxing or boot camp or self defense classes or ballet or tap or swing dance... or or or! I can go on and on again!
Listen, like I have been saying over & over again & many others in the blog world, find an exercise AND food program that you can live with long term. Hey, it may, heck, it is going to change along the way but look how many ways you can change it up. Plus there are plenty of DVD's out there & if money is tight, head to the library OR find them cheap at sales or garage sales!
I think I have said enough.. NOW GET OUT THERE & MOVE! ![]()

i say add boring to more boring.. lol. lift while watching tv.. you're just sitting there anyway!! do reps between commercials, or make a weight ball game with your child. there's always a solution.

I suffer from boredom in the weight room big-time, but I've found that some high-pitched yodelling always makes me fill better about being there. Actually imagining all sorts of things I'd like to say or do in the gym does provide an endless source of amusement. And killing time in the gym is half the battle (unfortunately, it's the easy half).
Good post.

I too have been a victim of boredom in the gym. I try to mix things up when I start feeling it creep up-like doing exercises in front of my TV (like Cher) and I do A LOT of people watching at the gym! That sometimes makes the lifting and cardio go by a teeny bit quicker. I also like to take it outside (if its not too hot) and do exercising-gotta change up the scenery!

Oh, brushing my teeth is soooo boring! All that up and down up and down. Don't even get me started of having to do BOTH sides, sooo boring and tedious.
If you want to find a reason to fail, you will.

It really is easy to get bored during workouts, both at home and at the gym. I think your suggestions to mix things up and keep it fresh are great. Do you think that doing a deadlift of a 36 pound two year old counts as strength training?
See? I'm learning the lingo!

Cher.. YES, I have written a lot about using those commercial breaks for some moving about!
Jack, I LOVE the weights. To me, never boring & the best part of the workout. I am going to have to do a post about that & mixing it up in the gym! Well, another post. I do tend to blog about that a lot!
Amanda, the cardio is the worst for me.. I listen to my music & watch the TV & that is the best I can do.. not many in the gym at the hour I go.
Dr. J... you are so right about that!
Diane, you are too funny!@ I want to see that deadlift! FJ wants to see it too!
