Sweet & Easy Dessert Treat

Sunday, August 16, 2009

I wanted to watch the first show of the newly crowned winner of The Next Food Network Star, Melissa. So, I set it to record & watched it after the fact. On her show, she had a very easy dessert that I think we all can handle & it sounds great, cool & refreshing for the hotter weather! I have not tried it yet BUT she did mention that it got RAVE reviews from family & friends. The picture above is from The Kitchen website & is not an applesauce granita BUT I wanted to show you what a granita looked like in case you did not know.. I did NOT before the show! The previous website defines a granita as this:

A granita is a traditional Italian dessert of puréed fresh fruit, sugar, and water that is semi-frozen and then scraped or shaved. Similar to sorbettos and italian ices, granitas differ because of a much coarser texture. They are very simple to make and usually never contain more than four ingredients, and so versatile; you can use almost any seasonal fruit to make a granita.

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

Granita:

  • 2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup plain regular fat free yogurt (not Greek-style)
  • 1 tablespoon good quality maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

For the Granita: In a shallow 8-inch square pan, stir the applesauce and lemon juice together and spread the mixture evenly in the pan. Place the pan in the freezer for at least 1 hour.

For the Sauce: In a bowl, combine the yogurt, maple syrup, and cinnamon. Chill the sauce until ready to serve.

Remove the granita from the freezer. With a fork, scrape the surface of the granita to gently fluff it up. Serve immediately, in dessert glasses or dishes, drizzled with yogurt sauce.

Sounds yummy to me. Looks pretty. Might be great for a get together & you can pretty it up like above. Let me know if you try it!
