How do you define yourself?
Are you a mother, a child, a professional, a doctor, a wife a husband. The list goes on. You can be a combination of two or many descriptions to define who you are as a person. BUT, I think more importantly, you have to define yourself for YOU before you define yourself as something else. Yes, you may be a mom but how many times have we read in articles & on blogs that you have to be good to yourself & find out who you are before you can be better for others. Being a mom does not mean you can't have your own identity & maybe this will help with empty nest syndrome, for example... I have not had to deal with this so you moms out there, help me on this.

Now I will be the first in line to say that I have NOT mastered this, even at my age! Although our definition may change over the years, I still think that it MUST include acceptance of oneself.

What got me thinking about this? Well, first, I know that I define myself by my workouts & how fit I look. It is not a vanity or I am so fit & muscular thing. I am probably one of the most insecure people you can meet! It is just that working out is the one thing that I feel I do well & feel accomplished at when I do it. Working out is not a job BUT we all have to feel good about something.

BUT, what I also know & have been thinking a lot about lately is that this is not how I should define myself. I need to learn to accept myself which has not been part of me my whole life. Who knows why- upbringing, things that happen in life or whatever. But many people are able to turn this around & learn to like and yes love themselves. I read it on the blogs all the time! Defining myself has become "the new goal for me". Yes, I continue on my fitness/health goals but they are "easy for me". I find that part easy compared to defining me & being happy with me.

I am a fan of The Next Food Network Star. On last night's show, Melissa, who moves on to the final two (YAHOO!), spoke about her life & that her single mom committed suicide when she was in college. She went on to work in the Corporate world for 10 years with great success but she said "that her mind was fed, but not her soul".  She also said that going into the final challenge she remembered a saying that said,  DON'T FEAR FAILURE, FEAR SUCCESS AT THE WRONG THING. She went on to say that she may fail tonight, but she will fail at the right thing.

HECK! I thought what she said was so amazing. But what I really thought was even if she did not move on to the final round, she had not failed at all. She had fed her soul & went after her dream. She had mastered her fear of failure to TRY and to try at the RIGHT THING!

So, I continue to work on defining me for the right thing, to feed the soul & to do what is right for me. No, I am not near there but at least I am still trying. Not great at it but just knowing your faults & insecurities & wanting to fix them is better than nothing! PS: I also like my Quote of the Week - "A goal is a dream with a deadline".

How do you define yourself? Are you many definitions BUT did you define YOU first? Have you fed your soul or are you still working on it? Anyone like me & still trying to define and "like" themselves? Pass on any stories or helpful advice for all of us out there!

On a lighter note, the return of CANKLES!!! OH NO! I wanted to post this before I forgot it! If you recall, I wrote about CANKLES back on July 15th. It was all about Gold's Gym having cankle awareness month. UGH! I have now heard this story at least 3 times lately on the major news channels! Yes, go ahead & take advantage of women & their insecurities even more! The Today Show had a whole segment on it! AND, this is the big part!!! I had to mention that they had a plastic surgeon on the show. He said the cankle liposuction is 1/3 his business!!! It costs between $5000-$12,000!

HOLY CRAP! DR. J, you wrote about the docs that might do this... well they are out there already! Granted, at the end of the segment they say how you should not fret or obsess over this after they spent 5 plus minutes talking about it. If you want to see it, here is the link:
