International Sarcoma Awareness Week, July 18-26th

I know I have written about Sarcoma & the 2009 Team Sarcoma Initiative many times before BUT I hope you just bear with me as I do it again. Starting today, there will be over 80 events taking place worldwide during the Team Sarcoma Initiative's International Sarcoma Awareness Week. There are many different events from bike riding, walking, bowling, wine tasting parties and more! It is not too late to get out and enjoy, exercise and help a very rare cancer at the same time. Those of you that have either battled or know someone that has battled cancer, it is beyond tough going! There are no words. Even more so, rare cancers DO NOT get the funding that the more known cancers get so they need our help even more.
Those that have visited before know that my mom passed away from liposarcoma, one of over 50 subtypes of Sarcoma. You can check out this post, Exercise and Help Cancer Research if you are new to my site. Also, once again, you can see The Faces of Sarcoma at this link and see all the ages, genders, races and nationalities that this cancer hits.
Here is an email I received from Bruce Shriver who started the SarcomaHelp site. His daughter died from Ewing's sarcoma at 37 years old. You can read her story hear, Liddy's journey with Ewing's Sarcoma. Here is the email:
There will be over 80 events taking place worldwide during the Team Sarcoma
Initiative's International Sarcoma Awareness Week, July 18-26th. Many are
sarcoma awareness events while others are also fundraising events
benefiting sarcoma centers and sarcoma advocacy groups. There are over 25
medical centers, 25 sarcoma advocacy groups, and 30 groups of "sarcoma
families" involved (see http://is.gd/1tfzw). Descriptions of the events can
be found on the Initiative's website, www.Team-Sarcoma.net (click on any of
the entries under "2009 Event Locations").
Our goal this year is to have over 10,000 participants involved in this
Initiative worldwide. Hundreds of people have stepped forth to help reach
this goal by organizing and promoting a wide variety of events. I hope that
you will be able to participate in at least one of them. There will be 6
events in Australia, 4 events in Canada, 4 events in Lithuania, 3 events in
Spain, 2 events in the UK, 2 events in Poland, 2 events in Croatia, and one
event in China, Denmark, France, Malaysia, Mexico, and one or more events
occurring in the following 26 states in the United States (Alabama, Arizona,
California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky,
Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, New York,
North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah,
Vermont, and Virginia) and the District of Columbia accounting for another
50+ events.
The Team Sarcoma Initiative amplifies every voice and creates lasting,
supportive connections. Together we can make a difference.
Best,
Bruce S.

Goal: In Support of Everyone Involved with Team Sarcoma
Teams around the world are giving their time and talent to make this year's International Sarcoma Awareness Week (July 18-26) a success. Would you help us raise at least $500 in their honor on Facebook? As a part of this special effort, a few matching pledges have been set up on our Cause page. This means that when you donate, you help ensure that those matching funds are also donated. So your tax-deductible donation to sarcoma research will go farther. Also, please make sure to see if there is a Team Sarcoma event in your area, and show your support. More information can be found at the Team Sarcoma website: www.team-sarcoma.net Together, we WILL make a difference!

This is a very touching post. I'm so sorry for your loss. I've never heard of this disease, but I'm going to check out the links. Thanks for sharing.

Thx for visiting Diane & for checking out the links. We had never heard of sarcoma before my mom got it & most of the docs never heard of it either! It is often misdiagnosed.

I share your loss, Jody, as my Mom died from cancer a couple of months ago. Honestly, I don't think research is the answer, but rather making the changes in our environment that we already know to be dangerous.

Sorry for your loss too! It is such a terrible disease no matter which kind. I lost a couple other relatives to other cancers. I just hope for any kind of help in the future whether it be research or environmental!
