Help in the Kitchen

When it comes to cooking, I am not afraid to say that I AM HORRIBLE AT IT!!!! I have tried & it just does not seem to be my thing. I tend to like my chicken on the dry side, although my hubby does not, so I try to get it moist & rarely succeed! I admit that I always want to make sure to cook it thru & even have one of those thermometers, but most of the time, it is not quite as moist as it should be. I am also guilty of not being sure how much to buy before it may spoil... AND I am also guilty of being one of those people that sees that special recipe I want to try (not all of them) so I go out & buy some ingredients & then either don't like the recipe, the recipe was for my hubby & he does not like it OR I never get around to making it! That happens quite a lot cause I am not fond of cooking!
So, I saw this news story on my local ABC station about sites that let you either plug in your left overs & they come up with recipes OR you plug in just a few ingredients & you get some recipes. I thought, what a great idea! Use up the stuff I bought & is still good so I don't waste money! Anyway, here is the article along with the websites for those of you that are either cooks & could use this OR not cooks like me & need to find a way not to waste money on the stuff sitting in your kitchen!
Learn to cook with left-over ingredients
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Did you know the average American throws away 14-percent of the groceries they buy at the store? If you don't want to waste food anymore, Food Coach Lori Corbin has some suggestions on how to use what you have before it goes bad.
Lily Wu enjoys cooking, but she's not the type to plan a seven day menu for her family.
"I am not organized enough to plan everything a week in advance," said Wu.
She's exactly the kind of person several new cooking Web Sites are designed for.
"Pretty much any combination you can think of, at least some recipes will pop up, or if there's nothing you can make right this second, it'll at least tell you what recipes are close to those ingredients," said Tim Lang, SuperCook.com.
There's SuperCook.com, Recipe Matcher, BigOven, Mealopedia and more. They use search engines to find you recipes from all over the Web. Each site offers different options. For example, on Super Cook, if you open an account it will customize suggestions for you.
"It can also do things like keep track of what's in your kitchen and it can make custom suggestions for you on what other ingredients to buy," said Lang.
Lily likes all recipes dot com because she can also input ingredients she doesn't want to use.
"That's very useful for me because sometimes you have someone with allergies or is picky," said Wu.
Not a super chef? You don't have to be, the recipes you typically get are easy to follow. But if you're a great cook you can certainly expand your options.
"If you're a more experienced chef, you can start to envision more possibilities and maybe get out of a recipe rut you have been in for a while," said Lang.
And a tasty way to save money is to check what you have leftover in the fridge or pantry, then got to Leftover Wizard at BigOven.com. Put in three main ingredients like chicken, rice, and mushrooms they will show you all the recipes they have involving these foods. Boasting over 170,000 leftover recipes, there's little need to eat the same foods twice.
Those sites are free, and with some you can create your own account to keep track of your ingredients and choices.

I have to say, I love to cook! It's an artistic adventure. My meals may not always taste good, but they almost always look good! Presentation is half the battle

Hi Jody, I'm not a fan of cooking either. My daughter (8) is starting to show interest in cooking, so for her sake I am trying new recipes and trying to enjoy it.
A couple of Australian Mums wrote a cookcook called "4 Ingredients" and they have been on the bestsellers for months. It shows that simple and quick meals can be tasty too.

Josie, too funny as usual! I am with you there. Not a good cook here either! My hubby does not even want me cooking his meat!
Annabel, you are great cook, per your blog. Hope this helps.
Kellie, I am all for LESS ingredients! I can see how they are best sellers!

I'm useless in the kitchen and quite happy that way, actually. I chop and stir more than anything else.
