Gym Gripes!

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

When you saw the title of my post you probably thought, Jody who loves the weights & the gym... what the heck is she talking about!!!! Well, truth be, I have lots of gripes about the gym.. or should I say gym etiquette! I have wanted to "B" about this for a while & today is as good a day as any. I may make this ongoing because otherwise this post would be way too long! So, with no further ado, some of the things that drive me crazy in the gym:

1. People that do not re-rack their weights and/or do not take the weight plates off the machine they were working on! Every morn when I walk in the weight room, weights & weight plates are strewn everywhere! It drives me crazy! If you are strong enough to pick them up OR put them on a machine, then you can damn well put them back.. AND THAT DOES NOT MEAN PUTTING 30 POUND DUMBBELLS IN THE AREA FOR THE 3 POUND TO 15 POUND DUMBBELLS! Drives me crazy that people can't put their weights back & with the weight numbers right on the rack, can't you get them in the right place! Same with the weight plates. It tells you right where to put them! Crap, I spend more time taking weight plates off the machine then doing my own workout. Well, not really, but why should I have to waste my time & energy!

Etiquette: PUT YOUR WEIGHTS BACK WHERE THEY BELONG & TAKE WEIGHT PLATES OFF ANY MACHINE YOU ARE ON WHEN YOU ARE DONE! Don't put a 35 pound weight plate where it says 10 pounds!

2. If you take dumbbells or barbells out of the weight room, bring them back when you are done!
Similar to above except now I have to spend 10 minutes plus running around the gym looking for the weight or barbell I need to use. Again...

Etiquette: PUT YOUR WEIGHTS BACK WHERE THEY BELONG & IF YOU TAKE THEM OUT OF THE WEIGHT ROOM, BRING THEM BACK & PUT THEM WHERE THEY BELONG!

3. People that sweat like no tomorrow and bring no towel or one that is so tiny, it is a wash cloth!
I know all about this because I am a "sweater". So, I bring not only a larger bath towel that covers a bench but also a smaller one for my face. Nothing says GROSS like a person that leaves a sweat mark of the shape of their body on the bench or machine! Jeez, the gyms supply paper towels & spray now so the least you could do is wipe it down afterwards. I sometimes use the paper towels & wipe down the bench after my towel becomes too damp. Come on people, how hard can it be to bring your own towel or wipe down your own sweat!

Etiquette: OBVIOUS HERE, BRING A TOWEL BIG ENOUGH TO WIPE OFF ALL THE SWEAT OR WIPE IT OFF WITH PROVIDED PAPER TOWELS.

OK, I have lots more but I am going to stop here for today because these are the things that bothered me the most this morn during my all weight day routine!

OK, even though I will continue this at a later post, feel free to get some "issues" off your back & tell me what bothers you the most! Hey, nothing wrong with a plain ole bit*h fest! Feels good sometimes!

    Duh!

You'd think this stuff would be obvious, but it isn't!

My gripe... people who try to "save" equipment by throwing stuff on it while they alternate sets on another machine. Fine if the gym is empty, but having to wait for someone who isn't even using the machine is obnoxious.

I've gotten so I'll just remove their belongings and use it anyway.

Yeah, every regular at the gym has gripes about some people's inconsiderate habits. When we do this stuff, we are often the last to notice

I'm lucky to belong to a very good fitness center that really watches out for it's members.

My pet peeve is people who wear a lot of cologne or perfume. I'm really sensitive to smell and I simply don't understand why anyone needs to wear scent to the gym. I don't care if you smell like sweat; in fact I hope you do! I'll take sweat any day over Drakkar.

Not putting the weights back is one of my biggest complaints too. You would have been so proud I leg pressed 180 yesterday with my trainer. Damn near killed me, but I did it.

I am with on these gripes. To add to your sweaty people bring towels, I hate it when they don't wipe off the machine after! Use your towel or get a paper one to just wipe and clean the seat/machine.

Crabby, I am known to do what you hate BUT I work out when nobody is around!

Dr. J, you are right.. BUT I do follow my advice in this post.. maybe not all gripes though!

Charlotte, hear you on this. I do understand some people come from work so there is left over stuff BUT some smell like that just poured a bottle on them! It does not mask the smell.. have they not figured that out yet!

Kristi, HOLY COW! Did that in the old days. Not anymore! My legs always get big & even now, although I press more than I did a few years ago when I was trying to stay small, I still have to be careful.. gymnastic legs!!!

    Amanda, I am with ya!

I agree with all of these and I'll also toss in the folks who bring in enough "auxiliary" equipment to start their own gym and plunk it down in the mat area, usually in the very area I'm trying to clear of weights so that I can work out. I have perfected the evil eye and can usually get them to move it with one raised eyebrow.
