Before I start my post, I must say "HAPPY MOM'S DAY" to all you moms out there!!!! Much respect and admiration for all of you! Also, I want to honor moms in my life. Of course, my deceased mom. You can read more about her here, In Honor of Moms. She passed away from a rare sarcoma cancer which is discussed in the previous post. This cancer effects all ages so please check this link out to see all the ages & faces this cancer effects: The Faces of Sarcoma. I also want to honor my deceased mother-in-law, Sue and Auntie Gloria. Such wonderful women & missed so much! I also have two great stepdaughters, Stephanie & Lisa that are wonderful moms!!!! Amazing moms! And their mom, Gail, raised 3 great daughters. The third daughter, Jennifer, is not married yet but she is the one doing boot camp & loving it! My sis Bethe, another great mom & support system to me! My living aunt, my mom's sister, Barbara, a great mom. Another sister, Jaime, although we are in a "bad time in our relationship" right now, still a good mom. All too far away (except Jennifer) but close in heart! Hugs out to all of you! AND, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO STEPH & JERRY!!!!

So, just to get a bit of health & fitness info in here today. I always am interested in aging articles because I am getting up there & although 51 is not old, I can tell you that your mind starts to thing about age a lot more. I also like to fight the aging process & I am going to continue to do that as long as I can. I really feel that my exercise & eating habits have made a huge impact on my quality of life. It definitely is more of a battle as we age. The body & female hormones are going to fight you no matter what! I have had to exercise harder and/or more, eat a bit less for now (probably even less as I age since I do eat more calories than most women) & change up my protein/fat/carb ratio constantly! Honestly, I have had to make changes every 6 months for the past couple years! I am fighting not only perimenopause but I still have that lovely monthly cycle so I have two whammys coming at me! YIKES! Not a time in the month when the hormones do not attack!!!! My poor hubby! BUT, I can say that the weight training I do is so important to fighting this aging process. A must! And cardio is important for heart & lung health. When I was younger, I never thought I would be doing what I am doing now including HIIT and plyometrics at 51! And of course we all know how important eating a healthy "diet" is too maintaining our weight but fighting off illness.

Anyway, a good article here o
n exercise & aging. Here is a bit of it:

While studies show that most folks gain about a pound of fat and lose up to 1/2 pound of muscle each year (starting in their 30's), it doesn't have to be that way. Most of us will never see the bodies we once had at 20, but avoiding middle-age spread is easy with healthy eating and exercise habits.

Why We Gain Weight As We Age
Most people think that gaining weight and getting older go hand in hand. Recent studies tell us that's just not true. That means, unfortunately, the jig is up and you now have no excuse for being overweight (the exception being those with medical conditions, etc.). Here are the major reasons for putting on the pounds:

  • Being less active
  • Not maintaining muscle through strength training
  • Eating more calories, even as metabolism slows down
  • Gradual loss of body cells which leads to burning fewer calories while at rest

To sum up, while there are some elements we can't control, most of the weight gain that comes with aging can be avoided. Did you get that? WEIGHT GAIN IS NOT INEVITABLE AS WE AGE.

Have a wonderful day & mom's day if you are a mom. Aging is inevitable by growing old is not! Age is just a number!

happy mothers day to you and your family as well!

i agree that gaining weight is avoidable, and we need to get some kind of regimen going in our "younger years" in order to make it a habit that will last our whole lives.

    Hi,
Like we don’t have enough to worry about with our butts and boobs sagging, now some genius doctor has discovered Syndrome W which affects older women. This isn’t my problem as I’m the way I am from lack of exercise, etc. but it is a problem...
