In Honor Of Moms

Friday, May 8, 2009

Because I think many of you will be busy this weekend & may not get to the computer to check the fitness sites & more, I wanted to do my Mother's Day post today. I will post Sunday too, but I really want to get this post & the information in it out today when more people will see it. Also, I have a link towards the end of the post with a short video called "The Dash". Please take time to watch it.

Today, I want to talk about my deceased Mom. Her birthday is May 14th so Mother's Day & her bday always fell near each other or on the same day. For those of you that might not look at my green sidebar, near the bottom, I have a "My Cause" post. This is what is says:

This is my own personal cause & for those that don't have one, they may want to think about donating to one of the Sarcoma Foundations below. My mother passed away from a rare form of cancer called Liposarcoma. It is one of about 50 subtypes of sarcomas that affect all age groups from the youngest to the oldest. It is a "a cancer that begins in the muscle, fat, fibrous tissue, blood vessels, or other supporting tissue of the body". There is no cure & funding is low because of its rarity. As some of you may know, the rarer the form of cancer, the less money that is usually allocated to it by the larger organizations like the American Cancer Society or the NIH (National Health Institute) as well as fewer people donate because they just don't know about it. This cancer just keeps coming back, grows back where it already was & spreads to other areas as well.

I know many of you already have causes you support OR it is just too hard right now. All I ask is you keep this cancer in mind if you do not have another charity/cause you give too. I only do this because the funding is so low for this cancer & it literally eats people alive by growing back over & over again & in the same & different places. It attacks all ages from young to old. You can see The Faces of Sarcoma  by clicking here.

In addition, there is a Team Sarcoma event every year in July that is not only in the U.S. but it is also an international event. This year it is July 18-26, 2009. Check out this link, Team Sarcoma 2009 or this link Team Sarcoma to see if there is an event near you. Just by getting some exercise, you can give!!!!!!!!

Please check out the other links under My Cause for additional organizations, a YouTube video on this cancer & a site if you want to buy a t-shirt or other apparel item to support the cause. There are also some great bracelets for those that may want to give that way... only $5 each!

GIVE AWAY! I have 2 of the previous mentioned bracelets. If any of you are interested in having one, please leave a comment on why you want one & I do ask that you try to wear it out & about so people my ask about it & you can spread the word of this deadly cancer with no cure for now.

I have lost my mom (liposarcoma) and my mother-in-law (small cell lung) to cancer. They said my mom's cancer was not related to her smoking which she had stopped about 5 years prior to the cancer but I just don't know. I urge all of you to be aware of your body & urge those family & friends around you to do the same. If something is not right, follow up. My mom was misdiagnosed multiple times because of the rarity of this cancer. You know your body better than anyone else!

A book to read: Anticancer, by David Servan Schreiber. He talks about food, exercise, way of life and reads easily (he talks about his own brain cancers).  This is a very recent book (end 2007) and it is very in line with the new (November 2007) recommendations from the World Cancer Research Fund.

I hope this is not too much of a downer for you all but I felt I really wanted to get this out there. You all have a very happy & wonderful Mom's day!!! Be good to yourself & take time for you too! Please watch this very inspiring video & let me know what you intend to do with "Your Dash".

Thank you all for your support of my blog!

PS: The pictures above are my mom. The "play pic" has my mom in the middle with the 1920 banner on her. She loved drama, theater, singing and more so after my dad passed, she got back into this. She loved it & I am glad she got to do some of it before cancer took her life in November 2006.

not a downer at all, but a great inspiration for LIFE!!

i definitely want to be remembered for my "dash" and the positive changes I'm making will help me with that goal.

i'd love a bracelet to get out the word out on sarcoma. it's scary to think of how many people could be misdiagnosed, especially if the person is fit or an athlete.

big hugs to you. your mom was an amazing woman!
