"Diet"/Health Tips/Info

Thursday, April 8, 2009

Well, I had a whole different subject I was going to blog about today but then I opened up my email & read an article, then I looked at some other blog sites I  love to read & Kristi over at Summer Fitness had a post exactly about one of the articles I read and then I read a couple more articles packed full of info & then my sister, Bethe, sent an email about pistachios which I love (I posted about the recall with a link to the FDA site on Thursday, April 2nd - FDA Website). So, after all that, it lead me to this post for today!

First, Kristi posted about a co-worker diagnosed with cancer. I had just read an article about Cancer Symptoms Women Ignore. It was really detailed & very interesting plus it had information I had not heard before. As I always blog about "listening to your body" in terms of food/exercise, "it’s just as important to listen to your body and notice anything that’s different, odd, or unexplainable. You don’t want to join the ranks of cancer patients who realize too late that symptoms they’d noticed for a long time could have sounded the alarm earlier, when cancer was easier to cure." There is a list of 20 symptoms not to ignore like: Wheezing or shortness of breath; Chronic cough or chest pain; Frequent fevers or infections; Difficulty swallowing; Swollen lymph nodes or lumps on the neck, underarm, or groin; Excessive bruising or bleeding that doesn’t stop; Weakness and fatigue; Bloating or abdominal weight gain — the “my jeans don’t fit” syndrome; Feeling full and unable to eat; Pelvic or abdominal pain; Rectal bleeding or blood in stool; Unexplained weight loss; Upset stomach or stomachache; A red, sore, or swollen breast, Nipple changes; Unusually heavy or painful periods or bleeding between periods; Swelling of facial features; A sore or skin lump that doesn’t heal, becomes crusty, or bleeds easily; Changes in nails; Pain in the back or lower right side.

My mom had fatigue & weakness & she was a very active senior taking exercise & academic classes before this started. Her doctor blew her off. She stuck up for herself & kept going to the doctor but by the time she was diagnosed, it was basically too late. This is another important point.... if you really thing something is wrong & the doctor says not, be persistent & stick up for yourself!!!! Please see "My Cause" at the bottom of the left column of my blog for more information on her cancer.

Please click on the link in this paragraph to read more about what these symptoms mean.
I think women in general tend to put their family & others first so this is a great first step... BE AWARE!

Second, I read an article about Stop Dieting and Start Listening: 5 Tips for Better Health. Again, I preach the "listen to your body" & what works for me may not work for you. We are all different plus we need to find what works for us long term. "One-size-fits-all diets don’t work because each person is unique, with different needs based on gender, age, ancestry and lifestyle. How could one diet be right for everyone? Given half a chance, your body will balance out by itself, but this is only possible by getting out of the diet mentality and listening to what you truly need. Imagine taking all of the outward energy you expend on diets, fads and gimmicks and turning it inward, so that you can listen to what your body really wants. Working with your body rather than against it will bring about increased energy, stabilized weight and sustainable health. Eating consciously and making simple lifestyle changes will create positive results and release you from the endless cycle of dieting." Read the 5 tips in the link above. I do all of them. As for #2, I don't necessarily journal them but if I have a reaction, I try to figure out what I have done differently lately & then start eliminating those foods 1 at a time to see how my body reacts.

Third.... Pistachios! We all know about the salmonella problem with those yummy pistachios. My sister sent me an email from her food coop parent company that said:

I thought you'd like to know that you can still buy 'clean' pistachios. UNFI & HERSHEY IMPORT COMPANY UNAFFECTED BY PISTACHIO RECALL. Hershey Import Company, a division of UNFI, has confirmed that the company has not purchased any of the Pistachio Nuts affected by the March 31, 2009 recall. As a result, product packed by Hershey Import Company, including Woodstock Farms brand, is not affected. In addition, UNFI has not purchased any of the Pistachio Nuts affected by the March 31, 2009 recall. Therefore, Bulk Pistachio Nuts from both UNFI and Hershey Import Companyare not affected. Finally, to date, UNFI has not been notified by any of our suppliers that any products we carry are affected by the March 31, 2009 Pistachio Nut recall. Should this change, we will update this message accordingly.

I sure hope the above info has helped you all or that you learned something you can take away with you. Let me know what you think & if you have subjects you want me to blog about. As always, thx for visiting!
