one of the #1 excuses I hear is "i'm gaining muscle" as an excuse. i know muscle weights more than fat, but i also heard Jillian Michaels slam this excuse on The Biggest Loser this season. i'd love to know your take on this "excuse" for seeing more lbs on the scale.

Hi cher. Muscle definitely weighs more than fat & burns more calories as well. But you have to know when this is fact & do not use it as an excuse. Your clothes are going to tell you if you are losing inches if the scale is not moving for you. OR, you can take beginning measurements & check periodically to see how many inches you have lost off your bust, waist, hips, thighs. Body Fat testing is a real indicator too. Often, you can go down in size without losing weight if you are gaining muscle. Saying that, I have been able to lose some weight but also gain muscle (lose body fat) and go down in size. This is all part of being consistent & knowing your body as well as being truthful with yourself. I am a perfect example of weighing more but being in a small size. I am 5'1" and weigh anywhere from 115 to 119 at different points in the month but mostly in the 116-117.5 range. I also wear a size 2, 4 or 6 depending on the maker but mostly 4's. Most people never guess me at my weight & think I weigh close to the 105-110. So, yes, muscle can cause weight gain but if a person is trying to lose a significant amount of weight, they should be losing pounds as well as gaining muscle thru the weight training.
