Help for Emotional Eating

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

We all know & have experienced the dreaded emotional eating. In fact, many people put on their weight strictly from emotional eating & not dealing with the issues behind those emotions. If you recall my post of Sunday, March 15th, emotional eating seems to be a bigger issue for women or so the study said .... which caused a lot of discussion on Diet Blog. Being a women, I hate to admit this, but from my experience with myself, friends, clients etc., this does seem to be a bigger problem with women than men.... BUT, men do emotionally eat as well... some not wanting to admit it because many men are brought up to hide their emotions.

So, emotional eating being a big issue and now with many people dealing with huge stresses from the economic conditions we face today along with just day to day stresses, I thought this article from Diet Detective would be of great help for many. The article, Change the Inside, So You Can Change the Outside , tackles the lack of control people feel they have over their lives. I actually use many of the points addressed and really feel that they will be a huge help for all of you to obtain your diet/weight loss and health/fitness goals.

Some of the points made are:
  • "Get Responsible" - many people blame their genetics or metabolism for why they can't lose weight. Studies show that people who believe they gained weight due to their own choices are more successful at weight loss. Let me say this about myself. I do believe that there is some truth to this genetic thing BUT that I do have control over changing it! I make all the right choices for me to help me succeed at my body goals. I was heavy when I was younger & still believe that fat cells only shrink but don't go away. I work very hard at eating as healthy as possible but still plan for enjoyment foods & I work out to meet my goals. I also have made changes all thru the years to reflect how my body is changing due to age & hormones.
  • "Have Confidence in Yourself & Give yourself a Pep Talk" - Key factors for weight loss are the ability to control and create your own outcome & be good to yourself and don't put yourself down!
  • "Compromise, Don't conform" - I am really into this. I know many people really need the packaged plans out there, they need somebody telling hem exactly what to do & eat and, yes, Weight Watchers is a great program & a success for many. For me, I like to be able to have a "diet" (food program) that works & is right for me and something I know I will want to do for life.
  • "Excuse Me" - Stop making excuses.. enough said
  • "Dream Planning" - Writing down your goals, visualizing them & how you will feel & look is a great motivator.
  • "Use Power, Not Willpower" - Clear the house of food that is just too tempting for you & fill it with healthy food & healthy alternatives, plan ahead for lunches, special occasions etc. Saying this, I still feel willpower is part of the equation too.

OK, that is some of the article & my take on it but read the full article & more great points at the link above.
