Life Long "Diet" Success

Monday, February 23, 2009

The first thing I want to say today is I do not like the word "diet" and you see me write "food program" or I write "just a way of eating for long term or for life". Unfortunately, I will still use the word diet in my posts. The reason is because this word gets "hits" and I want to bring people to my blog so I can get my story and advice out there. I want to share my thoughts on losing weight & keeping it off forever. I will try to remember to make note of this each time I use the word diet. It is a sad fact but a fact of life that people still go on and off diets rather that just change their eating habits for life. They need to put together "a diet plan" or food program that is attainable for them & they can stick with long term. Fad diets don't work long term. Going low carb for a few months to lose weight is not going to work if you are a carb lover. I am a carb lover & I have found ways to create a food program that I can live with for life. So .... you may see the word "diet" in my posts but I don't believe in "going on a diet". I believe in a healthy change of your habits that works for you & your goals and that you can live with forever.

OK, got that out of the way! I got started on this because it is just something I believe in especially since when I was younger, I lost weight the wrong way before learning how I can eat more calories, more healthy fats & still be leaner and where a smaller clothes size than when I as 25! A post on one of my favorite sites, Diet Blog, got me going on this. They did a post titled "Is Your Diet For life?". It got tons of comments on it & people are still posting comments including me! Obviously this is a subject with many views. I agree with Diet Blog which asks questions like I do about whether you would stick with this "diet" after losing your goal weight, is the food too restrictive, is the diet just hype and more. This is a good read & so are the comments. Check it all out here: Is Your Diet For Life?

I also want to share a good article on portion control too since many people have no idea how much they are eating. Portion control is a big part of losing weight! There are suggestions like eating on salad size plates which keep portions down & make it look like you are eating more and using serving size scoops (it is not that hard). Read here: Portion Control

One last article to help you eat your veggies. In these tough economic times, saving money is important so this article on fresh vs. frozen veggies will help you feel OK about eating the frozen varieties and save money too. You can add lots of spices to them, stir fry with garlic or ginger and spices, throw into stews, chili or soup, cook with a bit of low sodium chicken or veggie stock. There are lots of ways to make them work. Here is the article on the pros of frozen veggies: Fresh vs. Frozen Veggies
